Love is the "greatest of the three" ( 1 Cor 13:13) because love is who God is (in His being, in His essence) and it is the "part" (for lack of a better word) of God's glory that unites us with Him ( John 17:22 ). God is love and He gives us love from His own love. God is not faith (in His being), nor is He hope.
In 1 Thessalonians 1:3, Paul fleshes out a bit more what faith, hope, and love do to us. In encouraging the church, he says, "We remember before our God and Father — your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope — in our Lord Jesus Christ." Faith works because faith produces work.
13 So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love. 13 Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love. 13 But for right now, until that completeness, we have three things to do to lead us toward that consummation: Trust steadily in God, hope unswervingly, love
Still, Paul insists that love is greater even than these two bedrock virtues. It will abide, in a sense, even after our faith has become sight and our hope in eternity has been fully realized. Paul's bottom line in this chapter is that, of course, faith and hope are far more important than spiritual gifts and love is greater even than faith and 00JRR.
